Like to capture in 4K? You’re well catered for too with 4K DCI and 4K UHD options – both produced by oversampling the sensor’s 6K native output. The results are simply sensational.
But resolution is only part of the story: a massive 13.3 stops of dynamic range and an expansive 12-bit Canon Cinema colour gamut make footage from the EOS R3 mouth- wateringly good. A perfect fusion of stills and video
The right format for you
By combining different resolutions, frame rates, codecs and compression methods, the EOS R3 can offer a plethora of shooting formats. Alongside 12-bit 6K RAW, both 8-bit H.264 and 10-bit H.265 codecs are available, plus a choice of ALL-I, and 6K RAW light IPB or IPB Light compression. Frame rates from 24p to 120p are available when capturing 4K, and a 4K Crop setting is also available, giving a sensor size similar to Super-35mm.
Depending on the format being used, footage can be saved to both the camera’s CFexpress card and its SD card – great for when your client wants ‘rushes’ while you get on with editing. Additionally, whilst recording RAW to the CFexpress card, an oversampled 4K IPB version can be recorded to the SD card for use as a proxy.
High frame rate movies (without sound) with improved image quality can be captured at 120p/100p at 4K and 240p/200p/120p/100p Full HD resolutions - superb for action sequences and slo-mo effects.
The EOS R3 also offers Canon Log 3, which delivers a massive 13.3 stops of dynamic range and is easier to colour grade, so it slots effortlessly into your editing workflow. And for those looking for even more highlight and shadow detail, without the need to grade footage, 10-bit HDR PQ is also available.
When shooting in Canon Log 3, the Canon Cinema Gamut colour space is available. This not only provides the EOS R3’s widest range of colours, but also enables easy conversion to a number of industry-standard colour spaces, such as BT2020 or the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES).
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
Our renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system powers smooth, accurate continuous focusing when shooting video. It features Face, Eye, Head and Body detection (in that priority order)
– ideal for ‘run-and-gun’ style documentary filming. It can also recognise cats, dogs, birds and even motorsport cars and bikes, keeping them in focus as they move around the frame – just as when shooting stills.
Pull-focus effects, which shift your audience’s attention from one place to another, are easy to create. Just tap the camera’s touch screen and the EOS R3 will smoothly refocus from one point to another, at a speed specified by you.
Like to focus manually? The EOS R3 offers a number of tools to help. Focus peaking highlights the edges of in-focus objects in a colour of your choosing. Dual Pixel Focus Guide uses a graphical indicator to display whether the subject is front/back focused and turns green when correct focus is achieved.
Super-steady handheld footage
The EOS R3’s Image Stabilizer really comes into its own when shooting handheld video. When combined with a lens’s own IS and the camera’s electronic Movie Digital IS, unintentional camera movements are smoothed out to a virtually imperceptible degree – very useful when filming when walking or shooting handheld documentary or B-roll footage. The results are simply superb, looking like they were shot using a gimbal or dolly rig.
Intuitive filmmaking features
We wanted the EOS R3 to feel as instinctive when shooting video as it does when shooting stills. A high-definition 4.1 million dot Vari-Angle screen pivots away from the camera body, rotating through 270˚ to help you shoot comfortably from difficult angles. Zebra markers highlight overexposure and the industry standard HH:MM:SS:FF timecode is embedded into the footage, making multi camera editing a whole lot easier. The HDMI out feeds oversampled 4K 60p to your choice of input, whether a monitor or external recorder.
Extended shooting times
The generation and build-up of heat when shooting video can limit recording time when shooting video, with the memory card and camera body becoming hot to the touch. The EOS R3 is designed with improved heat dispersion characteristics to improve recording performance, and safety limits are active which turn off the camera should its internal temperature gets too high. But these can be turned off for extended shooting times when the camera is not being handheld.
The approximate shooting times for the available resolutions and frame rates in 23°C / 73°F environments from a cold start are detailed below 1.

If the camera reaches the temperature limit it is recommended to turn the camera off in order to allow the heat dissipate.
Approximate recovery times for a 23°C / 73°F environment are indicated below but are affected by various factors such as ambient temperature, continued camera operation and the selected shooting resolution. The time until full record time is available will vary with ambient temperature.

For the first time in an EOS camera4, shooting time restrictions have been removed, allowing up to six hours of normal video or 90 minutes of full HD high frame-rate footage to be captured.5
Professional time-lapse movie recording
A great option for slowly evolving sequences is time-lapse movie mode. The EOS R3 can be set to shoot frames at intervals ranging from 2 seconds to 99 hours 59 mins 59 secs for up to 3600 frames, at the end of which the images are combined to create a Full HD movie without the need of extra software. You can set up with confidence too: in the event of a power cut or battery exhaustion, You can start recording again from where it left off once power is restored.
Accessories
A range of new accessories has also been released to bring extra versatility for video production to the EOS R3. A new Directional Stereo Microphone DM-ED1 with no cables for clearer and more precise sound, plus an XLR adaptor for professional-level connectivity.
- The maximum duration of shooting may be shorter under some circumstances even if recording begins from “cold start,” due to a rise in temperature inside the camera caused by pre-shooting camera setting operations or by prolonged use of the Live View mode. When the card is full, movie recording stops automatically. In this case, duration time when you erase the data and restart shooting.
- When set Auto power off temperature : High, the card can be very hot. Be careful not to burn yourself when removing the card from the slot.
